Council resumes sand-mining

The Council administration under Chairman Arthur Nibbs has resumed sand mining on Barbuda in spite of a resolution in 2012 to stop. Nibbs said “Reality has set in… the council is currently in deep financial trouble. Our finances usually come from the central government, but the government itself is in a precarious situation”.

Elsewhere in the Caribbean, authorities have adopted a zero tolerance approach to sand mining as a result of the damage it causes to the environment.
