Gilda Webber

Gilda with her family

bb: Hello Gilda, tell us a bit about yourself and your family.

GW: I was born on the island of Barbuda and come from a family of four brothers and seven sisters. Three of them still live in Barbuda, one lives in Canada and five are living in the USA – three in Connecticut and two in Alabama. I left Barbuda in 1979 but moved back in 1991 for two years; now I live in upstate New York in a small town called Johnson City.

bb: Where did you go to school and what is your job?

GW: I went to school in Barbuda and enjoyed it then when I left I started doing my own business in Barbuda, but currently I work as a dietary assistant in the USA.

bb: Tell us about your family?

GW: I am happily married to Dion Webber, the son of the late Mary and Decosta Webber. We have been married for 25 years and have five children. Dion Jnr is in the marines and served in Afghanistan for 6 months. Amra is in the army and served in Iraq but is currently stationed in Germany. Devo is in the army in Georgia, and Deanna is a school student. In the picture I am with Dion and Cody (Dekoda) my youngest, who is three.

bb: Tell us what you love about Barbuda

GW: My favourite place in Barbuda is Rock Bay and I would have to say my favourite food is soldier fungi although it’s a tough one – I love corn dumplings and fried fish too.

bb: What are your plans for the future?

GW: My future is looking bright – it’s to be back here in Barbuda as soon as possible.

bb: What advice would you give to young Barbudans?

GW: We have made a lot of progress here in Barbuda, and I am proud of my Barbudan people. We should aim high, be the best you can be and do what you can for your community. Do not ask what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.

bb: Thank you Gilda, for being on “It’s My Life”, we wish you well for the future.
