bb: Hello Alana, how old are you?

AN: I am 24 years old. I was born under the sign of Sagittarius on 9 December 1979.

bb: what is your background?

AN: I was born in the Hanna Thomas Hospital in Barbuda. I attended the Holy Trinity School until 1998 when I left with 5 CXC passes and went to Guyana to study veterinary medicine at the pre-vet level.

bb: why did you chose this career?

AN: I saw the need for a vet in Barbuda as livestock here was increasing and it is important to keep them healthy. The Barbuda Council awarded me a scholarship to study, which included travel, tuition fees and accommodation on campus. I studied in Demerara on the east coast on the Regional Educational Programme for Animal Health Assistants (REPAHA)

bb: did you like Guyana?

AN: Oh yes. Guyana is a beautiful place with very nice people and I would recommend visiting to anyone.

bb: tell us about the course

AN: The course lasted for 2 years from September 1999 to July 2001. I studied a number of areas of animal health including surgery, pathology, and physiology. Now I have a Diploma in Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health.

bb: what are your future plans?

AN: At the moment I am working with the Barbuda Council as the veterinary assistant for the island. I would like to pursue a career in veterinary medicine and become a fully qualified vet.

bb: do you have hobbies?

AN: My hobbies are surfing the Internet, travelling, and dancing. I like meeting people and enjoy participating in pageants and was first runner-up in the Miss Historical Pageant at Caribana 2002.

bb: have you advice for other young people?

AN: In life I have been helped by my motto, which is to stay focussed on my ambition. I advise all young people to stay in school because education is the key to success.

bb: Thank you so much for talking to us Alana, we wish you well for the future.
