Barbuda’s public services are delivered mostly by the Barbuda Council with input from the Antigua government in national issues such as social security, medical benefits and education. Barbudans run their own administration day to day, collecting their own taxes to deliver these essential services.

The Council has administration local government offices in their main building and in the fisheries building where other departments are based and full Council meetings are held. There is also a Council Vehicle Licensing building at the old airport where local driving licences and other Transport Board administration is carried out on Barbuda. There is a workshop for the repair and maintenance of Council vehicles. There is a Land Office, a Tourism Office and a local government Social Security office. There are many other aspects of the Council’s work shown in more detail on other pages of this website including health services and early childhood education.

Barbuda Council administrative building

The Barbuda Council Local Government offices were built and maintained by the Council workforce, and is the base for the Secretary of Council (Chief Executive) to carry out their daily duties including collecting Trade Licence fees and payments to Council for services. There is a team of administration workers here, and the Treasury is next door, where bills and wages are paid.

The Tourism building also has a large team of Council staff and the building is open for every day visits and information about Barbuda. Occassionally there are crafts and souvenirs for sale.

Our Antigua Government Post Office has been rebuilt since Irma and is open every day for post and stamps at regular hours. All post has to be collected from the Post Office boxes inside the building.

Barbuda Council Ginnery

The historic Ginnery was a Council meeting room for many years but has yet to be repaired after Irma. This very old building was once used to store sea salt. Government House (below) has also fallen into a state of disrepair.

The community centre (below) is on River Road and is now – ten years later – fully repaired (although maybe without the style seen in the first two pictures which are pre-Irma) so it can be open for private hire and local events.
