Fisheries act consultation on Barbuda

Chief Fisheries Officer Cheryl Appleton has said it is too early to say what aspects of the Fisheries Act might be changed since further consultations will take place with stakeholders on Barbuda. Barbudans have grave concerns regarding the conservation of their fish stocks – including lobster – in the light of recent attempts by Chinese divers and others who take excessive amounts of lobster for export without permission, and who ignore the closed season, threatening the sustainability of the supply. Barbudans have been successful in conserving fish stocks for their own use for centuries and will take action against those who take fish or lobster unlawfully from their waters.
