Barbudan taxis and tour guides are the best way to find out about our island; we live it, you’ll love it! Book with them in advance and they will show you as much as they possibly can in the short time you have between the flights or ferries on Barbuda. Some hotels and tour operators in Antigua do day tours to Barbuda but we suggest you come and meet us in person, stay a few nights, go with the slower pace – you will be glad you did.
What to expect on a Day Tour?
You will be part of a small group, usually driven in an air-conditioned minibus, and you will have the full attention of your driver and guide for the day. You will be met at the ferry or flight, and then driven straight to the beautiful Codrington Lagoon wharf to go on small boats to the Bird Sanctuary where all your nature questions can be answered by our local Barbudan water taxi guides who are often local fishers as well. After that, you drive to Two Foot Bay to see the spectacular caves, and then go for lunch. After lunch – it’s Princess Diana Beach, where you will be close to our famous and locally owned Shaka Kai lobster bar and the stylish Nobu. After a swim and a walk, maybe a rum punch and a sleep…it’s time to head back to check in for the trip back to Antigua.
If you don’t want to be part of a big group most of the taxi’s and tour guides can arrange bespoke tours to suit you. They can show you what you want to see, take you where you want to go – for example, where you want to have lunch – and we will be happy to help you arrange it.
If you arrive without a taxi or tour booking at the airport or the ferry wharf please note there are no taxi ranks at either. And we have no public transport on Barbuda. There may be a taxi already there picking up others – just look for a tx number plate – but it’s much better to call ahead and book the taxi or find out about the availability of a tour a few days before you get to Barbuda. Barbuda will seem expensive compared to some other islands but remember we pay these prices too. Bring US$ cash so you can buy from local people who don’t have card machines, and make your stay memorable by trying to see all you can.
Sometimes it can be difficult to get through to people because our phone signal is not good – but most of us have e mail or WA so keep trying!
If you hire a car it can be delivered to you at the ferry or the airport on your arrival, and you can pay a local guide who don’t have transport to come with you in your hire car on trips to visit the caves or other places of interest. Local knowledge is important if you want to see some of the off-the-beaten-track parts of Barbuda.
If you are staying a few days – to get to the Bird Sanctuary, Barbuda Belle or Low Bay you will need to pre-book a trip with a water taxi (boat) and meet them at the Codrington Lagoon Fisheries wharf.
