The Antigua and Barbuda Development Control Authority (DCA) have sent a warning letter to Discovery Land Company’s Peace, Love and Happiness (PLH) project manager Justin Wilshire, to comply with a stop order after an inspection found that work at Palmetto had caused substantial damage to the area, which includes the edge of the lagoon, a Ramsar site of international importance. The Chief Environmental Officer Diann Black-Layne said that work PLH have carried out since July was in direct violation of the conditions of approval. The DCA’s letter demands developers immediately restore wetland mitigation areas, historic dunes and palmettos.
Barbudans are well aware of the environmental damage left behind in the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian at Baker’s Bay which is a Discovery Land Company property there, and we are not willing to allow what the Washington Post described as this ‘portrait of inequality’ to exist on Barbuda.
