The New York Times has reported accurately the news about De Niro and the opposition to extending his project from Barbudans. Trevor Walker said ‘We feel our land is worth more than US$6 million for 99 years’. Noting he didn’t oppose the development of the K Club, he added that the government had circumvented standard procedure by passing a national law rather than negotiating via the island’s Council. ‘We feel it’s a dangerous precedent to be setting for one investment’.
Here we have yet to see any evidence of income from this project, or funds being spent on the island – the economic situation on Barbuda continues to worsen.
